What stays on your device

Your choices are stored on your own device and are never sent anywhere:

• the language you picked (Japanese or English);
• your favorite stations, in versions that offer favorites;
• a copy of the station list, so the app opens quickly and works offline;
• whether you appear to be in Japan (see below), so it is not re-checked on every launch;
• on the website and Windows app, a flag recording that you opted out of page counts.

Clearing the site's data in your browser, or uninstalling the app, erases all of it. No copy exists on any server.

Your location

“Stations near me” uses your device's location only when you ask for it, and only after your browser or operating system asks your permission. The distance to each station is calculated on your device. Your coordinates are never sent to us or to anyone else, and are not stored.

Checking whether you are in Japan

Some broadcasters, NHK in particular, only allow listening from inside Japan. So that those stations are clearly marked instead of failing silently, the app makes one small request to one of those streams when it starts. If the broadcaster refuses it, the app knows you are outside Japan. The answer stays on your device. Like any request to a stream, it is seen by that broadcaster's server (see “Audio comes from the broadcasters”).

Anonymous page counts

Website and Windows app: Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views without cookies and without fingerprinting visitors. It records which page was viewed, not who viewed it. To send nothing, visit radio.japantv.app/?notrack once; the choice is remembered until you visit ?track.

Android and iOS apps: these contain no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting software, and send no usage data at all.

Audio comes from the broadcasters

Japan Local Radio is a directory. It does not host, relay or record any audio. When you play a station, your device connects directly to that broadcaster's own streaming server, or opens the broadcaster's own player, website or app. Station logos are likewise loaded from the providers that publish them.

Those servers receive your request, as any website would, and their own privacy policies govern what happens there. That includes NHK, the stations themselves and their streaming hosts, the JCBA community-radio player, FM++, ListenRadio and AFN.

What a web server unavoidably sees

Delivering the website, or the station list the apps download, means receiving a request. A request carries your IP address and your browser's or app's user-agent string. GitHub Pages, which hosts radio.japantv.app, handles these to deliver the files and to block abuse. We do not receive them, link them to what you listen to, or use them to build a profile.

What never happens here

No accounts and no sign-in. No cookies. No advertisements, and no advertising or marketing trackers. No data is sold, rented or shared with data brokers. Nothing you listen to is recorded by us.

Children

Japan Local Radio is a general-audience radio directory and is not directed at children under 13. No personal information is knowingly collected from anyone, children included.

Your rights

Wherever you live, including under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information and the EU and UK GDPR, you may ask what we hold about you and ask for it to be deleted. Because nothing that identifies you is collected, the answer will usually be “nothing”, but we will always reply.

Changes

Material changes appear here, and the date at the top of this page moves with them. If a future version starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released.
